Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When can I have my epidural?
A. Epidural anesthesia is usually administered upon your request. Your Physician must give the approval for the epidural. Certain criteria specified by the physician must be met prior to the administration of the epidural.

Q. Will there be someone to instruct me on breastfeeding?
A. All of our nurses at The Women's Pavilion are qualified to assist you with your breastfeeding needs. For a more in depth consultation, we have two lactation specialists on staff.

Q. May my family be present for delivery?
A. Our unit is family centered. The individuals present at your delivery will be at the discretion of you and your physician.

Q. How long will I be in the hospital?
A. For a normal vaginal delivery, the length of stay is 48 hours. For a cesarean, the length of stay is 72 hours. Your physician and the pediatrician will determine your discharge time.

Q. Can my husband or other support person spend the night in my room?
A. Yes; all of our rooms are equipped with loungers or a fold out sofa.

Q. When can I eat after the delivery?
A. After a vaginal birth, you may eat and drink as you wish, after the first recovery hour. During the recovery hour, you maybe have ice chips or liquids. After a cesarean, you may start with ice chips and your diet will advance as your physician sees fit.

Q. How long do I keep the IV after delivery?
A. The IV will stay in place until the physician orders the IV to be removed.

Q. When may I shower after delivery?
A. If you had epidural/spinal anesthesia, the anesthetic must be worn off, so that you are able to walk without assistance.

Q. What if my baby needs to be transferred to an intensive care nursery?
A. If your pediatrician feels that it is necessary to transfer your baby to an intensive care nursery, your baby will be stabilized and prepared for transport.
